Ellen,

I don't pretend to understand the ins and outs of the US health care debate, but what is clear to me is that a lot of the stuff written about it by people who call themselves Christian is anything but Christian, because it is based on unChristian and worldly values. It is perhaps easier to the a Christian out of the world than to get the world out of the Christian.

So after reading so much of that kind of stuff, it is refreshibng to read blogs like yours where you are trying to bring a Christian mind to bear on the debate. I only wish there were more!

Agree with you here. As a conservative, and a christian and a republican I believe that the conservative/republican leadership has utterly failed to lead on this issue for 12 years. We have effectively surrendered leadership on the issue to the Dems. The public option is a result. Conservatives should put their minds together and come up with an alternative. There's lots of things short of a public option that could be done to improve the existing system.

These same arguments from this article were likely made to establish the public school system. I can hear it now - 'Christians should support a public school system so all children can receive basic education from K to Highschool'. Sounds good - so what have we got? Public schools with the 10 commandments banned, prayer disallowed and religious... Read More expression otherwise suppressed, evolution taught (and not creation/intelligent design), the Bible isn't taught, and teaching all kinds of things that parents may not agree with. Conservatives have advocated for years a voucher type program to provide more school choice, but now there are power lobbies related to the public school system and a voucher program that breaks the public school system monopoly would be difficult to pass.

We should avoid a public option at ALL costs, but support a health voucher system for private insurance. Shouldn't we learn from out mistakes with publicly funded schools?

what are we [the Church] willing to do? that is the great question here. if conservatives and others don't want national health care, then what are they willing to do to make sure people quit dying of curable illnesses? i asked the same question during the election cycle in regard to the abortion issue. yes, i said, let's cut down and get rid of abortions...but in the meantime, what are we actually doing to prevent unwanted pregnancies and encourage young mothers? the list goes on and on. so folks want to have guns to hunt. great! can we at least agree we don't need sub-machine guns and admit we have a gun problem in our country? can we do something to try and limit gun use and unnecessary murders?

my sister cannot get affordable health insurance because of her pre-existing condition: diabetes. sucks to be her. she shouldn't have become diabetic at age 2. i actually had a Christian friend advise her to try harder to get a job that has good health benefits. if that's the best we can do, we pretty much suck.

Ellen,

My thinking is that this is a Waterloo for the Church. It would be easy for the government to step in and provide health care for the underprivileged. But the Church would have missed the golden opportunity; To show others that love is action. If what we are after is changed hearts in America, then I do not know of another time in history that has offered such a ripe opportunity for the Church. But I fear that we are more concerned with new buildings and new AV equipment.

Ellen,

You have a keen sense of cutting to the heart of matters. Since we live outside the US with International insurance, much of the debate is moot for me. But I have been alarmed at my own internal response to all this. I want it to fail because I want Obama to fail. Is this not the problem with the church today? We don't like the personality (or we do like the personality) driving the issue so wish it well or ill accordingly.

Just listening to my own heart, I'm compelled much of the time to agree with Chesterton, that I, too, am the problem with the world-not because I like or dislike the current administration, but because I do not look to Lazarus' story or the Good Samaritan or even the Prodigal's story for Christ's way in the madness.

I've already written and deleted many other thoughts...

Thanks for always stirring my thoughts.

Ellen, you already have the energy of the divine, obviously. And the will of God for America? You couldn't have made it any clearer as to what that will is for His followers in America, and elsewhere.

" And now you may assume you know what party I support and you’d be wrong again – neener, neener!" Honey, you are vicious when it comes to being cute! "Neener, neener" is a solacism for a person of your stature. Look it up.
